I am going to give you the building blocks you lot need to become started and put you on a good solid foundation for your futurity drawing projects. Cars are difficult to draw considering they are liner and geometric, when designers do the finished drawings for cars they utilize very sophisticated design software on computers considering every attribute needs to be exact.

Fifty-fifty earlier the advent of estimator engineering cars were fatigued past people known as draftspeople, who produced a type of drawing known equally a technical cartoon. In these types of drawings every aspect of the cartoon is created though measurement and calculation using geometry Technical cartoon is geometry and equally much most mathematics every bit it is about drawing, in fact it is more about mathematics than it is nigh drawing. That's why I never had much of an interest in it as a budding creative person. How wrong was I because later on in life I realized all drawing is technical and about measurement but that is another story for another day?

In order to brand the task of cartoon cars accessible to anyone without having to exist a draftsperson or serious mathematician I am going to do this the easy mode?

The simplest easiest way to draw cars is to trace them.

The shock and horror of it, tracing is considered cheating by everyone except those who employ it and the truth is all professional artists employ information technology, if they say they don't they are either mistaken or liars.

The benefits of tracing far out counterbalance the disadvantages that'due south why professionals use it and also the reason why you tin can't utilize information technology because lets be off-white we can all trace pictures. It really doesn't compare with wasting ii or iii hours of your time on constructing a cartoon does it?

Surely it is better to waste matter a few weeks doing something the hard style than it is to only spend a day doing it past taking advantage of the tools developed to help and enable y'all to be more productive at a higher standard.

That is why designers do the drawings for cars using very sophisticated blueprint software on computers because every attribute needs to be exact and they can do information technology in an instant past comparison because the software does information technology for them.

Then who'southward cheating?

A classic auto, the 1950s Vauxhall Victor the car I chose to draw.

How to draw cars using tracing methods Part 1.

How to draw cars using tracing methods Part 2.

Everything y'all demand to hand for learning how to draw a car.

For this instance I am going to utilise a photo of a Vauxhall Victor which is now a classic automobile because information technology is old. They don't make them anymore which is probably why information technology has some appeal to me plus I recall them as a kid beingness something of awe.

I have printed the picture out onto A4 paper in greyness scale then I can see the tonal values of the image better and since I am doing a drawing I practice not demand color to produce the end upshot.

Master tracing skills reveled.

How do I trace my paradigm?

This is how to draw cars easy method one, I concur the printed paradigm up to the light with the back of it facing me and so as to be able to see it faintly through the paper. This is and then I can mark out the area with a soft pencil this does non have to be completely accurate information technology is but a ruff guide.

Then I identify the image face downwardly onto a surface and where I have fabricated the marks as a rough guide I then continue to completely fill the surface area in with the graphite stick then there is no white of the newspaper showing. When I have completed this process my picture is set to be traced onto the A3 drawing pad and this is how information technology works.

The graphite on the dorsum of the image can be transferred onto the cartoon pad when I redraw over the image, the pressure level of the pencil cartoon over the top produces faint lines past transferring the graphite onto the make clean paper surface.

So to trace my image I then place it onto the A3 drawing pad and position it where I want it because this is not a compositional piece I place it in the center and fasten it downward with blueish tack in the corners so it doesn't move. If it does movement when y'all are tracing the image it will spoil the construction drawing because the lines will not match or correspond with each other.

And then using the 0.5 technical cartoon pencil I draw over the prototype following the lines trying to create as much particular equally possible this needs to be done methodically so y'all don't forget where you are or what you have or oasis't drawn. I always offset by drawing the master outline first then the wheels and then adding the details like lights, windows, mirrors, trims, door handles, door lines and working downwards from the biggest to the smallest.

If you exercise lose your place and need to know where you are then it is possible to very carefully lift ane side of the motion picture off so you can see the image underneath. Call up though you demand to be conscientious because if it does non go back in the correct spot it volition ruin your drawing. When you lot are satisfied that you have washed enough you lot can and so remove the image to reveal what is underneath it is again best to do this by only removing one side first just in case you need to do more piece of work on it. If you do miss things out don't worry because with having so much information already on the paper y'all will notice it much easier to fill in any small details free hand later.

Now after doing this we accept the basic construction that has been reproduced onto the pad, doing a drawing in this way makes life much easier because construction is everything. If you create a good drawing getting the structure right other mistakes will not be so credible. How to draw cars as with whatever drawing ways that if y'all get the construction wrong, and so the end result will never expect correct. And so every bit you progress to practice your shading and tonal modeling information technology will look even worse.

Lets accept your skills further.

Now I expect that you don't just desire to exist tracing cars for the rest of your life and although it is a cracking pedagogy method for getting you to await and actually see it volition not enable you lot to develop your creative skills to make your own designs.

The next method volition enable yous to develop your skills further and become less restrained. If you lot accept been experimenting and developing your skills with the tracing method you lot should now take feeling for drawing cars which will make this next method easier. Shortly you will be feeling confident enough to push the boundaries farther and adventure being more experimental or creative.

My communication now would exist after working difficult drawing cars using the tracing method to move away from it and try using the grid method of drawing. Many artists use this method all their life once it is mastered and create some great pieces of fine art.

Drawing cars can be done by using a viewing grid have a expect at the instance below where I accept taken the flick of a Vauxhall Victor and divided it into a grid by using lines. This was done using computer software but you tin exercise it by using a ruler and measuring out the lines equally like in the example below, the grid will enable you lot to better find and define the areas you need to draw.

A 4B and 6B, these pencils are both soft pencils.

A 4B and 6B, these pencils are both soft pencils.

The real arts legend.

The humble pencil must exist the real arts fable as much as charcoal is the god parent, it must have truly revolutionized drawing in it's time and where would we exist without it?

Hard pencils go from H, 2H and upwards to 9H the college the number the harder they get.

Soft pencils become from B, 2B, and upwards to 9B the higher the number the softer they get.

In between these is the Difficult Black or HB which is the most used pencil in the universe.

Just press the button as shown in picture and out pops a point it saves a lot of time sharpening pencils and has many more than benefits. About equally adept as a graphite stick and saves getting your hands and face dingy from the graphite rubbing onto them.

Lets go on with information technology.

These are the materials I am going to apply to create my drawing.

A3 spiral bound drawing pad of fairly decent quality cartridge paper, this is twice as large as the picture I am going to draw because I always feel that I can ingather a moving picture smaller just I can't ever make it bigger in one case information technology is completed. If I draw it onto a bigger piece of paper then I tin if I want to add other images to it and class a composition because I accept given myself the space around the drawing to be able to exercise that.

The other tools are a soft black pencil known as a 2B pencil the one I e'er use for drafting is a 0.five technical cartoon pencil that has very thin fine graphite sticks inserted within it that feed out of the terminate when you lot press the push on the pinnacle. I use this pencil considering it is always abrupt and tin can produce a very fine line without scouring the newspaper caused by pressing too hard if you practise printing too difficult it brakes the graphite stick considering information technology is very soft. I also use traditional 4B and 6B pencils because you can create very dark tones about black with them and Very light tones by softly stroking the newspaper with them, practice a niggling with these pencils and you will realize what I mean.

I also employ graphite sticks that are large pieces of graphite that can exist used to comprehend big areas of paper with petty attempt.

Better Looking By Far.

I didn't realise that many of those viewing this page don't realise that this image is composed of my own original drawings made using the methods laid out for you to follow easy step by step.

I didn't realise that many of those viewing this folio don't realise that this image is composed of my own original drawings made using the methods laid out for yous to follow piece of cake step by footstep.

The grid method.

Using this filigree method ways that in the futurity you lot will exist able to calibration your drawings to any size bigger or smaller depending on the size of cartoon you want. Measure the size of your picture and and then split up or multiply the number to make your picture bigger or smaller. Measure the length and elevation of your motion picture, and then for case if it is 24cm wide and 18cm high then yous can divided it past half dozen giving y'all 12 squares in your filigree. That's four squares along the width and three forth the meridian this might be easier to understand by looking at the flick below that I have started. A give-and-take of advice the more squares you lot have the easier it will exist to construct your cartoon because y'all will have more points of reference I would advise you to use 3cm squares not 6cm like I take making it 24 squares in total.

Grid reference.

At present what you do is piece of work out where lines cantankerous your filigree lines to requite y'all reference points to be able to work out where the different lines and marks go because y'all are using a grid the expanse you are working in is lot smaller. This makes it easier because it enables y'all to go along things in proportion and not have to recall to hard about perspective. In the in a higher place picture notice how I have started by doing the front of the car and very fiddling of the balance and so I can exercise the detail square by square until information technology is complete. Don't worry too much if the first couple of attempts don't work out likewise as you would similar they will with a little practise and you will soon go quite competent at doing this. Below you will notice some pictures of my progress using this method of structure.

Describe anything.

Master this grid method and yous will presently be able to depict a machine or anything else, not only cars to any size y'all want. Some people make themselves a viewing grid out of articulate plastic sheeting with lines drawn onto it so they can place it in front of them to draw anything anywhere, landscapes, people, buildings or objects just near anything.

The fact is all drawing is most measurement, how you do that measuring is completely up to you. Y'all can do it the hard way or an easier style. The hard way is trying to draw freehand thinking you can just describe by looking. The hard style is not understanding that all cartoon is measuring, how you do it is up to yous. Yes I said the same thing twice because it's true.

Finally I have created a picture that is a combination of 3 methods.

1. I have traced the primary body of the car without the wheels and top half of the roof.

2. I have drawn in the wheels from an earlier film of the corvette and fabricated them fit the torso simply lowered it and so information technology is nearer the ground besides lowered the roof to make the car expect longer. This is very much like using the grid method because the tracing has given me reference points to piece of work from.

three. I take combined all the information gathered and made a mash upwardly thus creating my very own unique car from the learning I have acquired whilst putting this information together.

I promise this gives you the insight, enthusiasm and noesis to now create your own brew up and develop your drawing skills.

Cheers for your time and I wish you much success and enjoyment.

Just a little fleck about automobile tires and wheels.

Beneath y'all will find a short video about finding good visual information in the pictures you lot want to use as examples to draw cars from, so as to be more able to depict tires and wheels that look realistic. The question was asked how to you go your tires to expect that good, and then I made this short video to try to explain that your cartoon will only be every bit expert as the information yous take to re-create from, the better the moving picture the better your data and stop drawing. When you have drawn a number of unlike tires and wheels you will take also congenital upwards a visual understanding of how to make them look practiced, along with a visual retentivity that will inform your future drawings. The video gives an case of the detail you lot demand to be looking for when wanting to be more able to draw wheels and tires that look that good.

The harder you look, the more than information you volition find, in the case video beneath you volition see how, and also be told how to place that information, with expert detailed information in the picture you lot would similar to describe you will find it much easier to create realistic tires and wheels that expect that adept, likewise every bit realistic drawings.

Gareth Pritchard (author) from North Wales on Dec 10, 2012:

It is hard to say without seeing what you are talking about but I think a big problem for people in the kickoff is focusing too much in one area. Without comparing it and continuing back to accept a look at it from a petty bit of a distance, you stop up focusing also much in one area. Practise a little bit then take a look and compare information technology with other features on your drawing and the subject affair of the drawing, meaning what you are copying from. If you are not copying and then sorry yous are screwed mate, simply joking, ha, ha.

Expect at the whole drawing at a distance and don't spend too much time in one area, exercise a bit on one side then on the other. A fleck on the top then on the bottom, working around your drawing keeping it well balanced and ever stopping to have another look at it from a distance. It volition tedious you downwardly and give y'all more than chance of seeing where you lot are going wrong hopefully before yous get information technology wrong.

Thank you for the comment and if yous feel you need more help just inquire once more, to question is healthy.

Thank you, Gareth.

iluvcarsalot on December 10, 2012:

Hey there Gareth,

I just love your post. It seems that you love and know what yous are doing. Btw, I have a lot of trouble drawing cars. I always get the details right, such as grille, lights, rims, etc. Just, I afterwards finishing it, I realize that the proportions of some parts of the car(such as the hood, the forepart stop, the mirrors, windows, side quarter panels, etc.), are all wrong then information technology starts to look similar a cartoon-like auto. HEEELLPP!!!!

Gareth Pritchard (author) from N Wales on November xxx, 2012:

Hullo lambofan, if you look at the transformation of cars over a number of years y'all volition find in most instances that they don't alter profoundly from one year to the side by side. It seems to me that the car manufacturers but make subtle changes every twelvemonth or 2, you might come across a big change after ten years, from say 196o to 1970 but non unremarkably after only two years. The manner to do this would be to practise information technology the aforementioned way, take the standard auto then add or take something abroad or change it slightly, so do it once again and again, x or xv times adding or taking bits abroad or both. The auto manufactures besides go far their business organisation to find out what the buying public like, then cars modify co-ordinate to the changing tastes of the culture in which they exist. Information technology also seems to me that modernistic cars are less ornate than the older versions but they all seem to keep the basic shape. Modern cars don't seem to have every bit much chrome on them and bumper confined seem to take disappeared but I can't show you what I mean because I exercise not accept enough drawings or photographs of year on year versions. The best way to see this is with epitome searches for dissimilar yearly models and look closely for the changes. If you lot look and intentionally accept notice of this stuff it volition stick, giving you ideas as well every bit helping your learning past only looking closely but it will take fourth dimension , and not really happen over night. Yous volition have to work at it but the work will aid you develop your skills in many means over time. One thing I am sure of, is if you did this and presented your piece of work as a portfolio for getting onto a higher fibroid they would dear information technology considering it is the design process of developmental alter.

I hope this is helpful, thanks, Gareth.

Hullo akhil,

Cheers for a slap-up annotate and to be honest I wrote this page, and others because I could not find any books, that where really educational activity any more, than the information on my pages.

Take a look under the video on this page, (How to draw a car, Ford Mustang, Shelby, GT500, Hot Rod, 2012.) and you will find more useful links to information about drawing cars.

I would not like to recommend any books, only to say don't past down loadable books off line, have a look at second hand books off Amazon, don't pay more than x dollars.

Ask questions about things you lot would like to know about and endeavour to resist asking people to recommend annihilation online, that you will accept to buy considering in many cases people will only try to brand money out of y'all rather than providing yous with valuable information. There'south always enough for need but never enough for greed.

Promise this helps thank you, Gareth.

COOL

zone on February 20, 2012:

Thanks I'll work on constructing the figure.

Gareth Pritchard (author) from Northward Wales on February 20, 2012:

Hi Zone,

good question.

I personally have never had any problems with shading so because of that have never looked at it in the same detail, I am not devaluing shading it has great value but it just doesn't seem as of import to me. Drawings to me don't even demand shading if you can construct your figure well because the lines on their own create the illusion to me personally. Well placed lines can propose so much, I purposely left the shading out of this because I felt it important to teach people about structure equally I feel it is the most hard part of cartoon.

I experience that if yous get your structure wrong it will never look good, where as like I have said, you lot don't fifty-fifty demand shading if the outline and construction is good. The other reason I left it out was to encourage self evolution and experimentation, to give people a method where past they can make accurate drawings, giving them a stiff foundation to practise and experiment with shading by their selves.

As for the human figure it to has more than to practise with structure than shading, y'all see many people trying to hide their poor construction drawing by masking it with shading but it rarely works and ofttimes terminate up with a messy cartoon. The all-time manner to understand shading is to only practice shading, practice shading on blank tracings and get some photographic references of the figure. Trace them and and then devote your time to practicing your shading without the pressure of having to do the construction. Doing drawing in this manner will all the same help you to develop and strengthen your visual retentiveness but you will exist doing information technology in a less hard way.

If I was to show you a way of doing this with shading besides, would you actually be doing any drawing that'south the question I accept. If you want to do that then my advice would exist to take up photography, you will become much more pleasure and reward from it than y'all will from completely tracing images because then information technology is not drawing, it is a course of printing and will exist too uniform, and wooden.

Nothing in this world worth having, e'er comes piece of cake, if it does then it doesn't feel like it is worth very much.

Thanks for the opportunity, Gareth.

zone on February 20, 2012:

thanks for the information. Could you teach how to shade the man figure using this method?

thirteen is really good age to be pushing your boundaries and to say something is as well hard, volition e'er make information technology too difficult, give it a try and information technology might not be. If you try you volition succeed in not accepting that it is too hard and that will be a success in its cocky.

All the very best with your drawing and hope you only endeavour things instead of thinking they are too hard because they oftentimes aren't.
